All the arts we practice are apprenticeship. The big art is our life. -  M. C. Richards

"I only paint one thing. When I go out to paint en plein air, I am not there to paint a tree, a forest, a mountain, waterfall, lake, or any other thing. I am there to observe and hopefully to capture the effect of light. If I can do that, then anything worthy of being painted will appear on my paper or canvas as a tree, a forest, a mountain, etc. It will have been worthy because of the unique river of light and shadow that flowed across it for that one brief hour or two". ----Michele Cooper

General Information:
My teaching style is informal, and I welcome students at all different levels of skill. Our objective always is to appreciate the landscapes around us, and to capture some of that beauty in watercolor on paper. In addition, I have found that the camaraderie and good humor of the group helps one and all (including me!) through some unique challenges inherent in this illusive medium.

Unless otherwise specified, we meet from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a break for lunch mid-day.

For outdoor workshops, we recommend bringing a portable folding stool or chair and a light weight easel along with your materials if you are not comfortable working on the ground (or sitting on a log, etc.!) I will do a demonstration painting and several studies during each day, but will spend the rest of my time assisting and critiquing students as they work.
